Wild Frames – how it works

The mechanics of Wild Frames are not difficult to understand, but may take players unfamiliar with “drops” time to adjust to.

Instead of spinning reels, the layout shows a large grid of 49 tiles (7 high and 7 wide). With each “drop” the bottom falls out of the bottom of the grid and all 49 old tiles disappear. They are quickly replaced by 49 new tiles, falling from above. The excellent graphics developed by Play’n Go do make the drops appear very realistic.

Instead of paylines, wins are awarded when a new drop contains 5 or more connected tiles with matching symbols. Direction does not matter – as long as the matching tiles are touching that counts.

When a match occurs, the matching symbols light up and disappear. This causes tiles above the match to cascade down into the slots where the match was, and for more tiles to drop down from above filling up the entire display again. This can result in additional matches, which can then trigger more matches and so on.

The symbols used in Wild Frames draw from slot tradition. High symbols are 7s, bells, stars, and diamonds (the gemstone). Low symbols are card suits: hearts, spades, clubs, and diamonds (the shape).

Wilds are represented by tiles with large lit-up Ws. These can substitute for any symbol to make a match.

During normal play, a random drop can trigger a WILDCARD, when a random number of tiles are changed into Wilds. This can result in multiple, simultaneous matches (although not always).

There are no scatter symbols as Wild Frames does not have a bonus round. Instead there is a Charge Meter!

Wild Frames

How the charge meter works

On the right of the playing area is a round Charge Meter. Every match causes the meter reading to increase by the number of tiles in the match (a 5 tile match increases the meter reading by 5).

At the start of each drop the meter reads 0/20 – if the meter reaches 20 before a drop runs out of matches this triggers a TRANSFORM sequence, where a random number of tiles are all transformed into the same symbol. Hopefully this triggers yet more matches, and causes the Charge Meter to increase further.

Once the run of matches is complete, the charge meter reverts back to zero for the next drop.

Wild Frames

Wild Frames is great, but is it as good as Honey Rush?

Play’n Go deserve credit for creating another top-quality slot with this innovative new style. This is a fast-paced game that works well. The only problem we had was we think it was not an improvement over Play’n Go’s previous cascade mechanic slot, Honey Rush.

Anyone familiar with the two games will see the similarity. Both games go with a meter that fills up with matches in lieu of a bonus game. After several sessions on both, we have had to include that Honey Rush is simply the more engaging of the two.

This could be down to the use of hexagonal tiles in Honey Rush, instead of the square tiles in Wild Frames. Hexagonal tiles touch six other tiles at a time, while squares just four. It definitely seems that Honey Rush drops have more matches, the meter fills up faster, and there is more excitement generally. Wild Frames has significantly more tiles – 49 as opposed to Honey Rush’s 38 – but that does not make up the difference. Too many drops on Wild Frames were dead drops for our liking, and we found the Charge Meter very hard to fill.

The most noticeable difference of course is the theme. Wild Frames has a more grown-up, classic Vegas vibe while Honey Rush has…bees. Wild Frames may simply be an attempt to take the innovation from Honey Rush to a different audience.

In all honestly, though, if we had never played Honey Rush then Wild Frames would seem absolutely amazing. It is still a high-quality slot that deserves any slot connoisseur’s attention.
