The Carnival season kicks off soon, and Red Tiger is releasing Rio Stars just in time to get slot players into the spirit!
Rio Stars will be released on 6 February, and we recommend being one of the first players to try out this game’s party atmosphere. Login or create a new account at PlayOJO and get ready to go crazy!
Rio Stars – what you need to know
Rio Stars is a five reel slot with four rows and a return to player ratio of 95.73%.
Low symbols are card values (10, J, Q, K, and A) and high values are items associated with partying in Brazil: piña coladas, maracas, bowls of tropical fruit, and a parrot.
The Wild symbols is a Carnival Dancer, and this Carnival Dancer never dances alone! Normal wilds during the Rio Stars base game always appear in strings of four, making stacked wilds fairly common. Even more common are 2-3 wilds on a reel.
There is also a Scatter symbol which says “Rio Spins.” Land 3 or more Scatters and the Rio Spins bonus game is launched.
Game features – it is all about the drums!
Anyone playing Rio Stars needs to play close attention the carnival drums – this is what signals the features.
On random spins during the base game the drums come from either side of the screen and tap out a quick beat. This is followed by the appearance of one of the following four features:
- Rio Dancers – feathered fans fly over the reels dropping single Wilds in random spots before a spin resolves.
- Rio Multiplier – up to 20x multiplier on your next win. Not your next spin, your next win. If the next spin is not a winner, the multiplier holds over until there is a win (which we think is a very nice touch).
- Carnival Reels – the card value low symbols are all removed for one spin, leaving only high symbols on the board.
- Mega Wild – a 3×3 wild is added to the reels. If it lands this can produce a huge win even in the base game (see our test play below for an example).
These are all great features, and when they come close together (as happened during our demo) it certainly rivals the bonus game of most slots.
Rio Spins – the bonus game
Land three or more Scatters and the Rio Spins bonus game is triggered. When we landed 3 Scatters during a test we were awarded 9 Rio Spins.
During the bonus game the drums beat during every spin. We found that half of the time the drums beat without awarding a feature, however. Only when the drums appeared and made a second loud beat did a feature followed. This happened roughly every other spin (which is still a good ratio considering the quality of these features).
Why we love Rio Stars
The recent trend in slots design is to focus almost all of the action on the bonus game. Rio Stars bucks that trend, and does so very well. The features are very appealing and varied and will keep player interest going even during base game spins. It is possible to rack up some big wins without every getting to the free spins.
Red Tiger have also captured the party atmosphere of a Rio Carnival nicely. The graphics, animation, and colours all work really well. The soundtrack is also extremely well designed – it feels like a party but is not intrusive.
