In the world of new slot design, wolves are RED HOT! Ever since the release of NetEnt’s Spinsane earlier this year, there have been a string of exciting, wolf-themed new games. Perhaps the best of them all is released today, however: Ice Wolf from ELK Studios.
If you are eager to play Ice Wolf straight away (and we think most players should be), head to Casumo, where new ELK Studio games are loaded with lightning-speed! Simply log in or create a new account to get started.
How Ice Wolf works
ELK Studios describes Ice Wolf as “a traditional slot with modern features,” which possibly underplays the creative design of the mechanics of this game. This is not an example of a game designer simply sticking a popular theme on a standard game.
Ice Wolf has six reels and three rows (initially at least). There are an additional four rows which sit covered in ice at the start of each round, waiting to expand game play if the ice is shattered. A fully exposed set of rows has a whopping 74,088 ways to win!
Getting rid of the ice and bringing the additional rows into play can be done in two ways. The most comon way to start shattering is with a playline of three matching symbols or more. Every matching symbol will shatter a corresponding section of ice directly above it – get two matches on the same reel and two sections of ice will be removed. Shattering the ice reveals new symbols which can generate additional matches, and also triggers a respin. The respins keep coming until the matches stop – hopefully not before players clear the ice on the final seventh row at the top of the game.
The top row – what lies beneath?
Adding additional rows and getting respins on rows four to six is great, but it is when the seventh row is exposed that the action really starts.
Symbols on the top row are all top notch, and include Wilds, +1 Respins, and Multipliers up to 50x!
The only catch is the row will often include blanks with no symbol at all, so just exposing a piece of the seventh row is not enough to ensure a big win. If a top row symbol does come into play, however, get excited!
Enter the Wolfpack
Remember how we said there are two ways to break the ice covering up the top rows? The second way is through an Ice Wolf symbol, which can appear randomly on any spin.
The Ice Wolf is no ordinary wolf, of course, and once he shows his face an entire pack of white wolves will race across your screen from bottom to top, clearing all ice from their path.
Besides being a really exciting feature visually, the Wolfpack also brings at least one square from the top seventh row into play. Remember, this square can be blank, but the Wolfpack also triggers a respin to ensure players have a decent chance of scoring a coveted top-row symbol.
Why we like Ice Wolf
Besides breaking a lot of ice, Ice Wolf also breaks a lot of conventions that have gripped online slot design for years. There is no free spins bonus game in Ice Wolf, but the quest to reach the top row is a very satisfying alternative. Suddenly landing three scatters is thrilling, but watching respins slowly shatter icebound reels is a fantastic experience that players will love.
The look and feel of the game is top notch, and as ELK Studios designed Ice Wolf to be “mobile first,” players who take part on their phones or tablets will enjoy a top-rate gaming experience.
