A Dark Matter – welcome to Wraith Manor!
Normally we talk about the mechanics of a game first in our reviews, but the theme to A Dark Matter demands top billing.
Most slot producers talk about the importance of storytelling, but Slingshot Studios have really taken story development to a new level.
A Dark Matter is set in the town of Stonehurst, and centres on some mysterious disappearances taking place at Wraith Manor. For Wraith Manor imagine something like the setting of Downton Abbey BUT CURSED BY SOMETHING REALLY EVIL!!!
Great care has been taken to give A Dark Matter real depth. The characters in this drama appear are not just symbols on the reels – Slingshot have written in depth descriptions of each persona.
For example, Nigel Highmore has been sent to investigate a series of mysterious disappearances at Wraith Manor. He is described as, “a reclusive academic and adept puzzle solver who doesn’t work well with others” (this is just a short extract!).
Lady Eleanor Wraith “has the cold, hard stare of a judgemental headmistress,” and “is the sole remaining member of a bloodline peppered with rumour and intrigue.”
Every character (including the policeman Betram Lynch, servant girl Molly Perkins, and estate worker Silas Brewer) is fleshed out in detail.
Creating this level of background story detail is not something most game designers bother with (or if they do they do, they do not share it publicly). Some might question the necessity, considering that many players will just skip to the spinning and be on the lookout for big wins. This may be true – this slot would still be highly entertaining anyway without the background details – but it the fun is certainly increased with an understanding of the plot line.
How the game works
A Dark Matter is a high volatility slot with a standard five reel, three line (and five pay line) layout.
Besides low symbols (card values) and the high symbols that show each the residents of Stonehurst, there are also wilds and scatters.
But wait, we are not talking about just any wilds! A Dark Matter features INVADING WILDS™. When a full stack of wilds appears on reels two or four, a dark, gooey substance reaches across an adjoining reel, converting the next reel to stacked wilds as well. If one of the characters (for example, the young housemaid Molly Perkins) is on the reel that gets taken over, this person disappears dramatically as he or she is covered by black ooze. Seriously, this is one of the best slot animations we have seen in some time!
The scatter symbols are animated door knockers – a simple but excellent conceit for summoning a bonus game! Get three and win ten free spins. During the free spins round, any additional scatter adds another free spin, and of course be on the lookout for those INVADING WILDS™ which can appear at any time!
Other facts to know about A Dark Matter: there is an average return to player ratio of 96.18%, and a maximum win of £120,000!
